Total Evaluation: Building the Case for eLearning

Presenting Author: Trisha Coady, BscN, MscN(c)

Most e-learning programs and live educational opportunities will have standardized methods of evaluation, with the purpose of knowledge sharing and project improvements. The value of evaluation, a step that can sometimes get omitted, is vast. By evaluating both at a project and end-user level, our e-learning scripts and objects can continue growing as we consider them to be a living organism in most cases. We also provide our users with the ability to interchange knowledge and participate, more often becoming more committed to the project. How do we in fact measure our new internal e-learning program within a hospital environment?

The Kirkpatrick Model for Summative Evaluation can be easily applied to the healthcare sector and since 1975, has been a staple in the e-learning sector. This four level model of evaluation includes:

  • Level One: Reaction
  • Level Two: Learning
  • Level Three: Behaviour
  • Level Four: Results

In a study performed by CDW Healthcare in 2006, nurses said they felt somewhat comfortable with a computer, however less comfortable with information technology. Having said that, 86% of nurses believe that Information Technology has the potential to increase quality care. With nearly 30% of nurses having received no IT training whatsoever, the next step is for nurses and information technology personnel to establish a connection in an effort to increase IT awareness and utilzation.
