Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing - Nursing Research Database
by Kathleen Whittle, RN BA MHA & Dina Idriss, BA MHA MSc
ABSTRACT

The Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) is the national voice for nursing education and nursing research and represents nursing programs in Canada. CASN is representative of universities and colleges that offer part or all of an undergraduate or graduate degree in nursing. The CASN Council is composed of 91 member nursing schools. CASN is the official accrediting agency for degree nursing programs in Canada. In 2000, CASN began development of the Canadian Nursing Research Database. The data has been entered, through a web interface, on a continual basis by Canadian Schools of Nursing on funded and non-funded research conducted by faculty members, clinical partners, and other faculty partners. Data elements include the title of the research, information on the team members, the type, source and amount of funding and the category of research: administration, education, clinical and health policy. The database provides a mechanism to collect all nursing research information into one location for purposes of tracking, forecasting, identifying gaps, as well as for networking, identifying experts and research in specific areas. Summary reports can be generated on a national, provincial, school or researcher level as well as specific areas of interest. The data is used to identify areas for strategically targeting research efforts and to support requests to governments, granting agencies, and universities for greater funding support in the area of nursing research. The database will be demonstrated to participants in the conference through interactive screens and production of reporting possibilities.
